Ava MacCoubrey from Cobourg, ON has been named the Red Scarf Equestrian Dressage Athlete of the Month for August 2017 in light of her consistent results and success in the dressage ring.
In the spring of 2017, Equestrian Canada (EC) caught up with the 15-year-old rising star. At the time, MacCoubrey’s short-term goal was to qualify and represent Canada at the 2017 Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC). In July 2017, Ava not only represented Canada at NAJYRC, but was Canada’s highest-placed individual in the Junior division.
“It was my first time competing at NAJYRC, and it was such an amazing experience,” said MacCoubrey. “I am honoured to be named Athlete of the Month for August.”
Riding her long-time partner, Pablo (Cordial Medoc x Voltaire), a 20-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Lori Bell, MacCoubrey finished eighth in both the Junior Individual and Freestyle classes, scoring 67.474% and 69.050%, respectively. She also took 10th place in the Junior Team on a score of 66.459%.
“Pablo really pulled through and made it the best it could have been,” said MacCoubrey. “I never imagined this happening, so it's all very exciting.”
Working alongside her coach, two-time Olympian, Jacqueline Brooks, MacCoubrey was successful at attaining her 2017 goals. Over the next couple of years, she plans to continue building harmonious partnerships with her equine partners, and working toward her Olympic dreams.
As the Dressage Athlete of the Month for August, MacCoubrey will be receiving a generous gift certificate from Red Scarf Equestrian that can be used toward the purchase of elegant equestrian luggage, travel bags and accessories that are all made in Canada.
